A New Option for Difficult-to-Treat Depression

Depression can be difficult to manage when symptoms continue despite trying more than one antidepressant medication. For eligible adults, SPRAVATO® may offer another treatment option.

Grace Medical Group provides SPRAVATO® treatment in a supervised clinical setting with careful evaluation, monitoring, and ongoing psychiatric care.

SPRAVATO® is a prescription nasal spray containing esketamine. It works differently from traditional antidepressant medications and affects the brain’s glutamate system.

SPRAVATO® is FDA approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression. Depending on the clinical situation, it may be used alone or together with an oral antidepressant.

SPRAVATO® may also be used with an oral antidepressant in adults with major depressive disorder who are experiencing acute suicidal thoughts or behavior.

SPRAVATO® may be considered for adults who continue to experience significant symptoms of depression despite previous treatment.

A patient may be considered for treatment when:

• Depression has not improved adequately with previous antidepressant medications
• Symptoms continue to interfere with daily functioning
• Traditional treatment approaches have provided limited benefit
• A psychiatric evaluation indicates that SPRAVATO® may be an appropriate option
• Every patient is evaluated individually before treatment begins.

SPRAVATO® is administered in our office under medical supervision.

Before treatment, the clinical team reviews the patient’s health status and checks blood pressure.

The medication is then self-administered as a nasal spray while a healthcare professional provides supervision.

After treatment, patients remain in the office for observation for at least two hours. During this time, the clinical team monitors blood pressure, alertness, and overall response to treatment.

Patients must arrange transportation home following treatment. Driving or operating machinery should be avoided until the following day after a restful night of sleep.

SPRAVATO® treatment usually begins more frequently and then becomes less frequent over time.

For treatment-resistant depression, treatment commonly begins twice weekly during the initial phase. Treatment frequency is then reduced based on clinical response, tolerability, and individual treatment needs.

The treatment plan is personalized and may be adjusted as symptoms improve.

SPRAVATO® can cause temporary side effects during or shortly after treatment.

Possible effects may include:

Dizziness

Sleepiness or sedation

Nausea

Temporary changes in perception

Dissociation or feeling disconnected from surroundings

Increased blood pressure

Because these effects can occur, SPRAVATO® is given only in an approved healthcare setting with appropriate monitoring.

Grace Medical Group provides ongoing supervision throughout each treatment visit and continues to monitor progress during the course of care.

Many insurance plans may provide coverage for SPRAVATO® when medical-necessity requirements are met.

Coverage varies by insurance company and individual plan. Prior authorization is often required.

Our office can assist with determining coverage requirements and completing the authorization process when appropriate.

Is SPRAVATO® Right for You?

SPRAVATO® is not appropriate for everyone. A psychiatric evaluation is required to review symptoms, previous treatments, medical history, current medications, and potential risks.

The goal is to determine whether SPRAVATO® is a safe and appropriate part of an individualized treatment plan.
